It is unfortunate but visits with the doctor are getting shorter and shorter. If it feels like your doctor has her hand on the door to exit as soon as she enters the room, you are not alone. Because of increasing pressures on doctors to see more patients in less time, everyone is getting short changed! Here are some tips to help you get the most from a precious few moments with your doctor:
- Know your medical and family history. You should know your prescription and over the counter medications, the dose and how often you take each medication and why. Be aware of the diseases that your parents, brothers and sisters had or have (other family members like grandparents, aunts and uncles may be important, too). Keeping this information in your phone or on an index card in your wallet is helpful—especially in an emergency when you cannot speak for yourself.
- Take notes and write your questions before and after your visit. The notes before your visit will help you to remember the questions and concerns you need to address at each visit. The notes after the visit will help you to remember what was discussed at each visit as well as questions for future visits. Having a family member or friend present to take care of the notetaking is helpful.
- Eliminate distractions at your visit. Silence your phone or tablet and only bring family members/friends who won’t be a distraction. Do not treat this as a family reunion.
- Save the small talk for the end of the visit, if there is time.
- Remember, if your doctor is running behind, it’s likely because of an issue that could not be avoided. Don’t lose precious time simmering over a late start that would be better spent discussing your health.
